Broward Health Heart Month Events

Cardiovascular disease remains the number one cause of death in the U.S. -- with an average of one death every 40 seconds, according to the American Heart Association. Broward Health is offering a variety events, some at no cost, during the month of February to help raise awareness on heart conditions.

 

Broward Health will be offering the following free events to the public throughout the month of February:

 

Broward Health Medical Center - 1600 S Andrews Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316

 

  • Every Tuesday in February - BP Tuesdays

    Broward Health Medical Center will provide free blood pressure screenings to patients, visitors, and staff in the Main Lobby every Tuesday during the month of February from noon to 1:30 p.m. Blood pressure, cardiac services, and stroke prevention information will be provided.

     

  • Saturday, February 9, 2019 - 2nd Annual Spin-a-Thon

    Broward Health Medical Center will host the 2nd Annual Africk Family Foundation Spin-a-thon on Saturday, February 9th, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. The main event, the Spin-a-thon, is a four-hour, peer to peer, fundraising event where 50 teams on 50 spin bikes will ride non-stop. The fun-filled family event will feature a Kids Zone, Massage and Stretch Zone, silent auction and food. Proceeds from this high-energy event will benefit Broward Health Medical Center’s Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program. Our nationally certified program provides care to over 800 patients annually who have undergone a cardiovascular or pulmonary event.

     

  • Wednesday, February 13, 2019 - Community Blood Drive

    Donated blood remains an important and immediate life-saving resource. According to the American Red Cross, nearly 5 million people receive blood transfusions each year. Broward Health Medical Center will host a blood drive from Noon to 5pm in the 3rd Floor Atrium.

     

  • Thursday, February 14, 2019 - National Cardiac Rehabilitation Week Community Event

    The Broward Health Wellness Center will provide heart healthy nutritional information, education and prizes to patients, visitors and staff in the cafeteria from noon to 1:30 p.m.

  • Thursday, February 21, 2019 - Free Cardiac Screenings

    Broward Health Wellness Center staff will provide Heart Healthy screenings including blood pressure and cholesterol, to patients, visitors, staff and wellness center members from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

     

  • Thursday, February 21, 2019 - How to Keep Your Heart Healthy Lecture

    Violeta McCormack, M.D., cardiologist on staff at Broward Health Medical Center, will present a lecture on “How to Keep Your Heart Healthy.” The event, aimed at raising awareness about heart disease for the Greater Fort Lauderdale community and staff, will take place from 5:30 to 7:30pm in Broward Health Medical Center’s Atrium Conference Room.

  • Wednesday, February 7, 2019 - Blood Pressure Screenings

    Blood pressure screenings will be provided at no charge to patients, visitors, and staff from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

  • Wednesday, February 13, 2019 - Heart Health Screenings

    Heart health screenings including glucose and cholesterol checks will be offered from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Attendees are asked to fast for the screening.

  • Wednesday, February 20 - Heart Healthy Lecture and Cooking Demonstration

    Discover dishes that are good for your heart health and learn how to prepare healthy recipes that are nutritious and delicious. Enjoy a cooking demonstration and sample featured dishes.   • Wednesday, February 27 –Panel of Heart Experts

    Join in the conversation and learn how to prevent and manage heart disease. with a panel of heart experts including Kenneth Herskowitz, M.D., cardiac surgeon, Andre Landau, M.D., interventional cardiologist, and Paul Rondino, M.D., cardiologist. The event, aimed at raising awareness about heart disease for the community and staff, will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in Broward Health North’s Conference Center.

  • Every Friday in February - Blood Pressure & Cholesterol Screenings

    High cholesterol usually has no symptoms. A simple blood screening will shed light on your cholesterol levels and allow you to make informed decisions about your health with your physician. Screenings will be offered from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Cholesterol screenings are free, cholesterol profile is $20.00. To register, call 954.759.7400 and select option 5.

      

  • During February - Fitness Challenge to Community & Employees

    Sign up and receive free fitness class punch card. Complete five classes in the month and receive a small gift (i.e. water bottle). To learn more please call 954-344-3344.

     

  • Thursday, February 7, 2019 - Free CPR Class – Family & Friends

    The Family & Friends CPR Course teaches the lifesaving skills of CPR, AED use, and relief of choking in adults, children and infants. Skills are taught in a group environment using the AHA format, which provides students with the most hands-on CPR practice time possible. Class is taught by American Heart Association Instructors. This course is for people who do not need a course completion card for a job or other requirements, and others interested in learning how to save. Class will be offered from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00pm.   • Tuesday, February 19, 2019 - Nutrition 101 for Life & Support with Tatiana Pestana, M.D.

    Join this informative lecture and learn how making just a few changes in your lifestyle can make a difference in your health and well-being. Make 2019 the year you take care of yourself.   • Monday, February 28, 2019 - Emergent Cardiovascular Conditions - Dr. Gary Lai

Would you recognize the signs of a heart emergency? Join this informative lecture and learn how men and women experience symptoms, the importance of calling 911 immediately, and current medications and treatment options that must be initiated quickly.   • Tuesday, February 19, 2019 – Healthy Heart Lecture

    As part of our monthly High Tea & Trivia Lecture Series, Cardiac Services manager, Phyllis Ahern will provide a Healthy Heart lecture from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m.  Join us for some heart healthy tips and trivia games.  Refreshments and lite bites provided.

  • Friday, February 22, 2019 – Cardiac Care Health Fair Learn from each department of the hospital how cardiac care effects all aspects of health.Interact with our health professionals from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.Heart health screenings, lectures, and nutritional education to be provided.
