Brett Bauman enjoys making a difference in people's lives as Broward Health's associate general counsel.
Meet Brett
Name and Title: Brett Bauman, Associate General Counsel
Years at Broward Health: 2
What motivates me to come to work each day: First and foremost, I love being an attorney and practicing health care law. As associate general counsel, I assist the Board of Commissioners and the district in complying with state and federal laws and regulations, including the Sunshine Law and Florida’s Public Records Laws. Most people I speak to believe that I only work on contracts. However, I am the designated attorney at Broward Health Imperial Point, for the Broward Health's Medical Staff and for Broward Health’s GME program. Additionally, I am responsible for researching all of the unique and vast legal issues that arise for one of the nation’s largest public hospital systems. To say the least, I love learning and growing. Every day I show up to work, I learn something new. It’s a true motivator for me.
My favorite Broward Health moment: This is a tough one. However, there was nothing more satisfying than watching the C-Suite get dunked in the dunk tank during the diabetes charity events.
Advice I'd give to a new employee just starting a career in healthcare: There is a huge learning curve. Hang in there, be patient and be kind to yourself. As dynamic as the healthcare industry is, we never know everything and learn something new every day. That said, although it is somewhat daunting and fast-paced, many people in other industries don’t get the benefits that we get from helping other people. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing your work make a difference in another person’s life.
How I like to relax: Although I am not perfect in my practice, I enjoy meditation. There’s a lot of research regarding the mental benefits of meditating, even just a few minutes a day. Reading and learning are two other activities I find pleasure and relaxation in. Outside of that, my favorite activity, which provides me with the ability to relax is traveling. I try to get out of the country at least once a year. It’s truly incredible to experience the different cultures, landscapes and food around the world.
What I’m most proud of personally or professionally: Personally, I am most proud of my daily growth. Although I am not perfect and make many mistakes, I wake up every day and try to be a better person than I was the day before. I likewise pride myself in treating everyone that I encounter with dignity and respect. Professionally, I would say that I am most proud of my decision to become an attorney and to put myself through college and eventually law school. There isn’t a day when I regret my decision to become an attorney.
What’s on my music playlist: I like everything and have multiple playlists on Spotify. I like classic rock and 90's rock as well as hip hop. Sometimes, when I need to calm my mind, I will even listen to jazz or classical music.
If I could have dinner with anyone in the world, alive or dead, it would be: I would have to say James Madison. I would love to sit down with him one day and pick his brain on the framers’ vision of the United States following the ratification of the Constitution and, four years later, the ratification of the Bill of Rights. I would want to know, based on his personal beliefs as well as the debates that took place at the Constitutional Convention, what his thoughts are on the current state of the nation and what he observes working and not working within our national government.
