Janene John, Breast Cancer Survivor

Work was so busy for Janene John that she put off her annual mammogram three times. That's when her doctor urged her to come in.

John, chief human resources officer at Broward Health Coral Springs, is grateful for her physician's concern. Her mammogram discovered a malignant lump on her right breast.

“When I went back to work that day, I was in denial that I had cancer once again,” said John. “I scheduled surgery to do a lumpectomy, followed by radiation.”

This was John’s second bout with cancer. Fourteen years earlier, she had been diagnosed with cervical cancer after giving birth to her daughter.

John has been cancer free since 2014. “The first few years, I was a little skeptical that I would remain cancer free, but I am now assured that God has a purpose for my life since He has allowed me to live through two types of cancer.”

John is grateful for her family, friends and the medical professionals who gave her life-saving care. She urges others not to take their health for granted.

“I encourage everyone, men and women, to get checked and put yourself first when it comes to your health,” she said. “Life is too precious not too.”
