Today is National HIV Testing Day. Children's Diagnostic and Treatment Center physicians Lisa-Gaye Robinson, M.D., and Vanessa Rojas, M.D., provided us with some facts and tips about HIV testing:
- -Of the estimated 1.1 million people in the United States who have HIV, about 1 in 7 of them do not know it.
- -Nearly 40% of new HIV infections are transmitted by people who do not know they have the virus.
- -Since 2013, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once as part of their healthcare routine. Those at high risk should get tested at least every year.
- -People with HIV who are aware of their status can get treatment, remain healthy, and expect to live as long as those who do not have HIV.
- -The sooner you start treatment, the better.
