Meet Sandra
Title and Department:Regional Manager, Lab/Respiratory/Sleep/EEG
Years at Broward Health: 15
What I do at Broward Health:I'm an American Society of Clinical Pathologist-certified histotechnologist and immmunohistochemist. In my current role, I am the regional manager and focus more on operations. I develop budgets, cost-saving strategies, renew contracts, address outstanding invoices and ensure my departments and staff are compliant and following the standards from our regulatory bodies (College of American Pathologist, American Association of Blood Banks and the Joint Commission).
What motivates me to come to work each day: It all starts with my amazing team and colleagues! Coming to work knowing that I have trustworthy and dedicated people standing beside me is so rewarding. Secondly, I like challenging myself and advancing on a personal level. Being a leader has changed my confidence level and my entire life.
My favorite Broward Health moment: When I started at BHMC in 2004, I worked side-by-side with a pathologist who loved immunohistochemistry as much as I did. He read about a new antibody (GDCFP-15) that could differentiate metastatic breast carcinoma from ovarian and wanted to add it to our test menu. This was a very difficult antibody to work up because of the non-specific background staining. After many failed attempts, I finally developed the right formula and produced a clean, quality control. The following day, in conjunction with other markers, we were able to render a diagnosis to a very complicated case! Not only was this my favorite moment at BHMC, but the most rewarding of my career.
Some advice I'd give to a new employee just starting their career in healthcare: Do it because you love the field and can receive self-gratification in knowing that you played a part in a patient’s outcome, regardless of how small.
How I like to relax: Brunching, vacationing, and being adventurous with my daughter and special friends.
What I’m most proud of personally or professionally: Personally, I’m most proud of my daughter, Skylar Virginia.
What's on my music playlist: I love Neo-Soul! With that said, music by John Legend, India Arie, Anthony Hamilton, and Erykah Badu will always be streaming
If I could have dinner with anyone in the world, living or dead, who would it be and why: Maya Angelou
