It is my pleasure to welcome you to our Hematology and Oncology Fellowship Program. Our mission is to train the next generation of hematologists and oncologists in a dynamic and evolving healthcare environment. We are dedicated to equipping our fellows with the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to become outstanding clinicians and leaders in the field.

Our campus is located in beautiful Deerfield Beach, South Florida—just minutes from the ocean and within close proximity to Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and West Palm Beach. This vibrant and diverse region offers a unique setting for both personal and professional growth.

Broward Health is one of the twenty largest public health systems in the United States. Broward Health North, our primary training site, is a 409-bed Level II trauma center offering a wide range of medical and surgical subspecialties.

Our fellowship program is thoughtfully designed to provide a comprehensive and well-rounded training experience. Fellows benefit from broad clinical exposure, in-depth didactic education, and meaningful research opportunities tailored to their interests and career aspirations.

About the Program

Our Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship Program offers a comprehensive training experience that prepares fellows for success in both community-based and academic settings. As part of the Broward Health System, which is committed to providing high-quality, compassionate care, we focus on developing future leaders in the field of hematology and oncology.

The program provides a diverse and well-rounded clinical experience, exposing fellows to a wide range of hematologic and oncologic conditions with opportunities to refine diagnostic and treatment skills across multiple subspecialties. Fellows are equipped with the tools they need to excel in both private practice and academic careers, ensuring they can provide the highest level of care for their patients.

In addition to clinical expertise, we emphasize the importance of research, innovation and academic excellence. Our fellows are supported and mentored to engage in meaningful clinical research and contribute to scholarly publications, fostering the development of the next generation of medical thought leaders.

We are deeply committed to developing physicians who advocate for patient safety, quality improvement and the best possible outcomes for all patients. By the end of the program, fellows will be well-prepared to take on leadership roles in the evolving field of hematology and oncology, making a lasting impact on their patients and the broader healthcare community.

Hematology & Medical Oncology

Our board-certified hematologists and oncologists offer expert care through:

Inpatient consultation service
On-site hospital-based practice, where care planning and treatment are provided by physicians, nurse practitioners, and medical assistants. A full-time social worker helps eliminate barriers to care.

Genetic Screening & Counseling

For patients at high risk of cancer, genetic counseling and testing are available based on personal or family history, offering risk assessments and educational resources.

Outpatient Infusion Center

Treatment is provided by a multi-disciplinary team of oncology-certified nurses in a comfortable, relaxing setting.
Services include:

Chemotherapy
Immunotherapy
Hydration therapy
Blood transfusions
Intravenous nutrition
Administration of IV antibiotics and other medications

Inpatient Oncology Unit (3SE)

A dedicated unit tailored to the needs of cancer patients, supported by case managers, social workers and financial counselors to ensure seamless transition to outpatient care.

Radiation Oncology

In partnership with GenesisCare, we offer cutting-edge radiation treatments using:

Varian Image Guided Radiation Therapy: Provides precise high-dose radiation while minimizing damage to healthy tissue.
CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery: A non-invasive image-guided system for treating tumors in difficult-to-reach areas like the spine, pancreas, liver and lungs.
Brachytherapy: For prostate and other cancers, involving the implantation of radioactive seeds.

Surgical Oncology

Fellowship-trained surgeons, including urologists, gynecologic oncologists, and thoracic surgeons, utilize advanced techniques such as the da Vinci® S HD Surgical System for minimally invasive, highly precise procedures.

Interventional Oncology

Minimally invasive procedures like radiofrequency and cryoablation are used to treat tumors in the lungs, liver and kidneys.

Diagnostic Imaging

We use state-of-the-art imaging technology, including:

Digital mammography for accurate breast exams
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans
Computed Tomography (CT) scans – including our 128 Multi-Slice CT Scanner, the first in Broward County, providing unmatched image quality
Ultrasound-guided and stereotactic breast biopsies

Pathology & Laboratory Medicine

Our board-certified pathologists provide rapid diagnosis and treatment, offering Fine Needle Aspiration testing for various cancers. The department is accredited by the College of American Pathologists.

Pharmacy Services

Oncology-trained pharmacists collaborate with physicians to ensure the accurate administration of cancer treatments and minimize side effects.

Nutritional Services

Clinical dietitians offer nutritional counseling to help patients maintain strength and manage treatment side effects.

Rehabilitation & Physical Therapy

Our specialized team works with patients to help them resume a normal, active life through personalized treatment plans.

Clinical Research

Fellows engage in cutting-edge cancer research, with access to a wide range of clinical studies through our partnerships with leading medical schools.

Palliative Care Services

We offer compassionate care focused on pain and symptom management to improve the quality of life for both patients and families.

Hospice Services

Available both inpatient and outpatient, our partnership with Vitas Healthcare provides nursing care, as well as access to social workers, chaplains, and bereavement counselors.

Robust Clinical Training: Core & Elective Rotations

Our fellowship program offers a thoughtfully designed curriculum that ensures comprehensive exposure to the full spectrum of hematology and oncology. Through a balance of core and elective rotations, fellows gain invaluable experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings, with access to a wide range of subspecialties and advanced therapies.

Fellows actively manage complex cases, participate in multidisciplinary care teams, and work closely with experienced faculty to build expertise in diagnosis, treatment, and longitudinal patient care.

Applications

The Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship at Broward Health North is a three-year, ACGME-accredited program offering positions at the PGY-4 level. All applicants must have successfully completed a three-year Internal Medicine residency prior to the start of fellowship training.

Applications are accepted exclusively through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Our program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

Program Leadership

Chintan C. Gandhi, MD - Associate Program Director

Dr. Chintan Gandhi received his medical degree from C.U. Shah Medical College. He is triple board certified in Medical Oncology, Hematology, and Internal Medicine. He is actively involved with the fellowship program, clinical practice, utilization management review, and expert witness services, and has been in practice for 11–20 years. Dr. Chintan Gandhi’s interests include treating breast cancer, lymphoma, chronic leukemia, among other conditions.
