Welcome to the Broward Health Dermatology Residency Program in the sunny state of Florida. You will gain distinctive experience at each of our dermatology training sites within the Fort Lauderdale/Palm Beach/Miami metropolitan area.

This three-year, fully accredited ACGME post-graduate training program is designed to prepare physicians for the specialty practice of dermatology.

Successful graduates are eligible for certification by the American Board of Dermatology.

About the Program

The Dermatology Residency Program of Broward Health Medical Center is a three-year training program offering residents a unique opportunity to learn using educational and practical experiences. Our residents are equipped with the skills that will enable them to become excellent clinical and academic dermatologists who provide superior, specialized skin care.

Program Highlights

A robust inpatient dermatology consultation service with exposure to a wealth of pathology and complicated dermatologic cases.
A well-rounded clinical experience with rotations in a 700-bed, county-based hospital, local private dermatology practices and major hospital networks including the Cleveland Clinic Florida and West Palm Beach Veteran’s Affairs (VA) Medical Center.
Manage challenging immunobullous, connective tissue, and vascular diseases under the tutelage of acclaimed dermatologist and dermatopathologist, Dr. Carlos Nousari, during monthly specialty clinics.
Weekly resident continuity clinics held at Broward Health Medical Center which provide dermatologic care to the local community and indigent patient population.
A comprehensive academic atmosphere which includes weekly didactics, monthly Dermatology Grand Rounds, monthly journal club and lectures in dermatological surgery and dermatopathology.

Curriculum

The following are detailed descriptions of the rotations for each post-graduate year of training in the dermatology residency program.

General Dermatology Rotation

The General Dermatology rotation serves as the foundation of the Dermatology teaching program. Residents gain experience across multiple clinical settings, including:

VAMC West Palm Beach – Dr. Mason Henehan, Dr. Gabriela Lemoine, Dr. Michael Lake, Dr. Alfred Last, and Dr. Susan Schroeder
Nousari Dermatology - Dr. Carlos Nousari and Dr. Francisco Tausk
Skin and Cancer Associates – Dr. Asfa Akhtar
Imperial Dermatology – Dr. Simona Bartos

During these rotations, residents evaluate and manage a broad range of skin, hair, and nail conditions while working with a diverse patient population. Training includes general dermatology and surgical procedures, with emphasis on continuity of care. Topics include diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers, acute and chronic dermatitis, acne, alopecia, infections, connective tissue and autoimmune diseases, and inherited skin disorders.

Pediatric Dermatology - Dr. Andleeb Usmani

This rotation provides residents with comprehensive exposure to dermatologic conditions affecting infants, children, and adolescents. Residents gain an understanding of the full spectrum of pediatric skin disease, including how factors such as race, ethnicity, social environment, and family support influence presentation and management. By the end of the rotation, residents are expected to independently diagnose and treat common pediatric dermatologic conditions.

Inpatient Consultation Rotation - Dr. Denise Guevara and Dr. Carlos Nousari

Residents perform hospital consultations at Broward Health Medical Center using a team approach to manage cases such as drug eruptions, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis, vasculitis, pyoderma gangrenosum, Sweet’s syndrome, venous dermatitis, cellulitis, acute and chronic infections (including opportunistic infections in immunocompromised hosts), acute exacerbations of connective tissue disease, skin manifestations of internal diseases, and many other skin conditions. Additionally, residents learn how to make appropriate referrals or collaborate with other specialists in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Complex Medical Dermatology: Immunobullous / Psychodermatology / Psoriasis - Dr. Carlos Nousari, Dr. Francisco Tausk

Dr. Nousari and Dr. Tausk lead the comprehensive complex medical dermatology clinic several times a month where residents are integral in the assessment and management of many complex dermatoses including but not limited to: immunobullous, connective tissue, vasculopathic and neurocutaneous disorders.

Dermatologic Surgery and Mohs Micrographic Surgery Rotation – Dr. Thomas Breza Jr., Dr. Michael Lake, Dr. Paul Benedetto

Rotation goals include providing a hands-on approach to dermatologic surgery and cutaneous oncology, including Mohs micrographic surgery, understanding the management of cutaneous malignancies, and educating patients on the risks, benefits and expected outcomes of dermatologic surgery. During this rotation, residents will provide surgical care that is compassionate and effective for the promotion of general health. Residents rotate through with plastic surgeon Dr. Lake at the West Palm Beach VA, Dr. Breza Jr. at Dermatology By The Sea (MOHS), and Dr. Benedetto at Cleveland Clinic Florida (MOHS).

Dermatopathology Rotation - Dr. Carlos Nousari

The rotation, which is incorporated into the academic curriculum, will provide an organized and educational exposure to dermatopathology and histologic evaluation of the skin, including hematoxylin and eosin staining, immunohistochemical staining, and direct immunofluorescence. Dr. Nousari serves as the Medical Director of the Institute for Immunofluorescence at Dermpath Diagnostics. Residents will read pathology slides with multiple dermatopathologists who each have a unique area of interest allowing the resident to acquire an impressive breadth of knowledge within the field.

Cosmetic Dermatology Rotation - Dr. Shino Bay Aguilera

Dr. Aguilera is a board-certified dermatologist who specializes in cosmetic dermatology. His practice centers around beauty restoration and age-reversing techniques, including but not limited to fillers and neurotoxins, as well as a myriad of cosmetic lasers.

Wound Care Rotation - Dr. Bravo

Residents rotate at the outpatient wound care center with Dr. Bravo. This rotation will provide the opportunity to develop wound care regimens for patients with chronic wounds including diabetic ulcers, venous ulcers, arterial ulcers and more. Residents are exposed to hyperbaric oxygen therapy and learn the proper indications for its use.
