Welcome from the Program Director

Zachary Yablon, MD

Dear Residency Candidate,

Welcome to the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Broward Health North! Our residency campus is located in Deerfield Beach, South Florida, just minutes from the beach and close to Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and West Palm Beach.

The Broward Health system is among the twenty largest public health systems in the USA. Broward Health North is a 409-bed Level II trauma center with extensive subspecialty services in the medical and surgical fields. We are delighted that you are considering our program as a potential institution to continue your medical training. You have worked hard, and the next three years will become the foundation of how you approach and practice medicine. Our Internal Medicine Residency Program received initial accreditation from ACGME in January 2021 for 15 categorical positions. We are proud of the work and effort in achieving this goal with a group of experienced faculty in graduate medical education.

Our goal is to help you develop your full potential and provide an environment that is positive, energetic, and committed to your goal of becoming an outstanding physician.

We have implemented a block schedule model using the 4+1 system, where after a four-week rotation, residents spend one week in the continuity clinic. During that week, they have one half-day of protected time to work on their yearly quality improvement project and research. Our didactics include Morning Report/Case Presentations, Noon Conferences, weekly Board Review/MKSAP question sessions, monthly Journal Club, Morbidity and Mortality Conferences, and Grand Rounds.

What we have developed at Broward Health North will prepare you to be an excellent clinician, a leader, and a physician who upholds the highest humanistic qualities while also prioritizing your well-being. We are thrilled to be part of your future journey.

We welcome you to get to know us better and invite you to consider training at Broward Health North.

Sincerely,
Zachary Yablon, MD

PGY-1 Overview

The first year of residency (PGY-1) is designed to build a strong foundation in patient care through a structured and diverse set of rotations, with a primary focus on Internal Medicine. This year emphasizes the development of essential clinical skills that prepare residents for training.

Training Highlights
  • 24 weeks on inpatient medicine wards, providing hands-on experience in managing a wide range of medical conditions
  • 6 weeks of elective time, allowing residents to explore areas of personal interest or career focus
  • 4 weeks in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), enhancing critical care skills
  • 10 weeks in the continuity clinic, ensuring consistent ambulatory care experience and patient follow-up

This well-rounded structure ensures a broad clinical foundation, equipping residents with the core competencies necessary for success throughout the rest of the residency program.

Curriculum

Continuity Clinic

The continuity clinic is a cornerstone of training for residents pursuing a career in primary care, and at Broward Health North, we are deeply committed to excellence in outpatient education. Our goal is for residents to develop competence, confidence, and professional satisfaction in the practice of ambulatory internal medicine.

From the start of their intern year, residents begin seeing patients in their primary care continuity clinic. They are responsible for evaluating both new and established patients—performing history and physical exams, formulating diagnoses and treatment plans, and reviewing cases under the supervision of an attending physician.

The focus is on delivering high-quality, patient-centered care, while reinforcing the core competencies of internal medicine in the ambulatory setting. Residents are exposed to a broad range of conditions—both common and complex—and engage in:

  • Preventive care and health maintenance
  • Chronic disease management
  • Healthy lifestyle counseling
  • Stress reduction strategies
  • Cost-effective and value-based decision-making
  • Effective patient communication and satisfaction strategies

To ensure continuity, PGY-1 residents inherit some patients from the outgoing graduating class, allowing them to build their panel and maintain long-term patient relationships.

Clinic Structure:

  • Residents attend the clinic every fifth week, across all PGY levels (except during vacation and night float rotations)
  • Each preceptor supervises up to four residents per session
  • Residents serve as the primary care providers for their patient panel
  • Preceptors provide direct supervision, support, and regular feedback, while encouraging progressive autonomy

The integrated outpatient curriculum ensures that residents gain exposure to the full spectrum of ambulatory internal medicine, preparing them for success in both primary care and subspecialty practice.

Selective Elective Rotations

Allergy and Immunology Rotation

The Allergy and Immunology rotation is primarily conducted in the outpatient setting, with occasional opportunities to evaluate patients in the inpatient environment when necessary. This rotation offers residents a focused experience in the evaluation and management of patients with allergic and immunologic disorders.

Resident Responsibilities:

  • See both new and follow-up patients, performing comprehensive assessments
  • Develop and present a formal diagnostic and treatment plan to the attending physician
  • Gain experience in managing a variety of conditions, such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, food and drug allergies, eczema, and immune deficiencies

Attending Supervision and Teaching:

  • The attending physician provides direct mentorship, guiding residents through the clinical reasoning process
  • Residents receive feedback on the appropriateness of diagnostic testing, cost-effective care, and evidence-based treatment approaches
  • The attending also reviews the patient’s history and key elements of the physical examination, reinforcing essential ambulatory skills

This rotation enhances residents’ understanding of allergic and immunologic conditions, improves diagnostic accuracy, and builds confidence in managing common and complex outpatient care cases.
