Renato Gonik, MD

I am delighted to welcome you to the Neurology Residency Program at Broward Health. Our program is designed to equip trainees with the knowledge, clinical skills, and hands-on experience needed to become outstanding neurologists.

About the Program

The Broward Health Neurology Residency Program is a four-year categorical training program designed to develop outstanding neurologists. Through broad clinical exposure, a robust didactic curriculum and individualized research opportunities, residents build a strong foundation in neurology. Our dedicated faculty cultivates a supportive, inclusive environment that encourages both personal growth and professional excellence.

The Neurology Residency program is designed to train both community-oriented and academically focused physicians as part of the larger mission of the Broward Health System to provide high-quality, compassionate care to all our patients and their families.

Although we are a community-based hospital, being part of the Broward Health GME consortium allows access to numerous resources and areas of expertise, including excellent research opportunities.

Core Curriculum

PGY-1: Laying the Groundwork

Your journey begins with a well-rounded clinical experience that establishes the foundational skills essential for the rest of your residency training. During this year, you’ll develop core competencies through six blocks on the inpatient wards at Broward Health North, along with rotations in emergency medicine, the medical ICU, and quality improvement. Early exposure to neurology includes rotations in the stroke service, outpatient neurology, and neurosurgery—giving you a first look at the field you're about to explore more deeply.

PGY-2: Stepping Into Neurology

The second year marks your full immersion into neurology. Here, you’ll refine your neurological examination skills and begin managing a broad spectrum of neurologic conditions. Most of your time is spent at Broward Health North, where you’ll care for patients admitted to the neurology service, including those undergoing long-term EEG monitoring.

You’ll also begin your continuity clinic, following a panel of patients under faculty supervision and building long-term therapeutic relationships. Subspecialty exposure includes focused two-week rotations in behavioral neurology, physical medicine & rehabilitation (PM&R), epilepsy, and EEG. One block is dedicated to your first pediatric neurology experience, and another is reserved for an elective—allowing you to start tailoring your training toward your interests.

PGY-3: Broadening Skills and Subspecialty Experience

In your third year, you’ll continue to deepen your clinical acumen while expanding your knowledge across neurology subspecialties. You’ll return to Broward Health North for eight blocks on the consultation and stroke services, sharpening your diagnostic skills and clinical judgment.

You’ll complete dedicated time in neuroradiology, epilepsy, EMG, and neuro-ophthalmology. Pediatric neurology continues to be part of your training, and one block is reserved for another elective—giving you the flexibility to pursue areas that inspire you.

PGY-4: Leading With Confidence

Your final year is all about leadership, independence, and preparing for the next stage of your career. As a senior resident, you’ll take on more autonomy, while managing consults, inpatient care, and patients in the epilepsy monitoring unit at Broward Health North.

You’ll complete additional rotations in pediatric neurology and psychiatry, preparing you to care for patients across the full neurological and behavioral health spectrum. With two elective blocks available, you’ll have the opportunity to personalize your final year—whether you're preparing for fellowship, refining a subspecialty skill, or exploring a new area of interest.

All applications are processed through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). All applicant visitations and interviews will be conducted virtually throughout the application cycle.

We participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) and do not accept applicants outside of the Match. Our program offers a Categorical Neurology Training Program.

Program Leadership

Renato Gonik, MD - Program Director

Dr. Renato Gonik completed his Neurology residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami, and is board-certified in Neurology with a special qualification in Child Neurology. He graduated from UGF Medical School and the UFRJ Institute of Neurology in Brazil. Additionally, Dr. Gonik completed a fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology and Autonomic Disorders at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard University.

Dr. Gonik has a rich background in directing medical programs across private, public, and academic sectors. Before joining Broward Health, he served as Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Florida, where he established a pediatric autonomic disorders program and co-directed the autonomic lab.

Danisette Torres, MD - Associate Program Director

Dr. Danisette Torres is double board-certified in Neurology and Vascular Neurology and a South Florida native. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Vascular Neurology at Florida Atlantic University Schmidt College of Medicine.

She graduated from Ross University School of Medicine in 2019, after which she completed her intern year in internal medicine during the COVID19 pandemic at Trinitas Regional Hospital in New Jersey. Dr. Torres went on to complete her neurology residency at JFK University Medical Center, where she served as Chief Resident and received the Resident Research Award during her final year of training. After residency, Dr. Torres completed a Stroke/Vascular Neurology fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami.

Dr. Torres is passionate about optimizing stroke systems of care and patient outcomes, especially within minority populations disproportionately affected by stroke. She is passionate about community engagement and leads a stroke support group on the first Thursday of every month at Broward Health North.
