About Colorectal Cancer

What is Colorectal Cancer?

Colorectal Cancer is an umbrella term for multiple cancers impacting the large intestine. The type of cancer depends on where it originates:

Colon Cancer: Malignant polyps – small clumps of cancer cells on the intestinal lining –located on the first five feet of the large intestine or bowel, including the cecum, ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon and sigmoid colon
Rectal Cancer: Cancerous cells, or polyps, located on the last six inches of the large intestine (rectum)

Both types of cancer can be treated easily – or even prevented – with appropriate screening on a routine basis.

Risk Factors for Colorectal Cancer

Once thought to only impact those over 50 years old, colorectal cancer is becoming increasingly common in young adults from age 25-45. In fact, colon and rectal cancer can both happen anytime to anyone.

While changing habits related to your lifestyle can help reduce your chances of developing colorectal cancer, (losing weight, reducing the processed foods you eat and eliminating drinking and smoking), there are other uncontrollable risk factors, including:

Age: While colorectal cancer is becoming more common in younger adults, it’s still most often diagnosed in those who are over 50 years of age. That’s why we encourage you to schedule your first colonoscopy at age 45.
Genetics: Inherited and familial conditions, like Lynch syndrome and chronic ulcerative colitis, and a strong family history of colon or rectal cancer increase your chances of developing colorectal cancer
Race: Black and African Americans are more likely to develop colorectal cancer than other races
Weakened Immune Systems: Having previously had colon cancer, uterine cancer or ovarian cancer – or having received radiation therapy on your abdomen or pelvis in the past – can increase the likelihood you develop colorectal cancer

Signs and Symptoms of Colorectal Cancer

Most times, colon and rectal cancer don’t display symptoms until it’s progressed, which is why Broward Health strongly encourages everyone 45 and older – possibly even sooner, depending on your family history and other risk factors – to screen for colorectal cancer.

Screening for Colorectal Cancer

People who have any symptoms of colorectal cancer -- or who certain risk factors for this disease -- should talk to their primary care doctor so the right tests can be scheduled as soon as possible.

For adults with an average risk of colon cancer, experts recommend getting screened starting at age 45 with a colonoscopy every 10 years until the age of 75. Screenings aren’t recommended for those over 85.

Regularly screening for colorectal cancer is essential for those over the age of 45 (or those under that age with increased risk factors) to catch these cancers in their earliest and most treatable stages.

Colon Screening Options

Colonoscopies

A colonoscopy involves inserting a camera-equipped tube into the rectum, allowing doctors to view the colon and identify, treat, or biopsy any polyps or abnormalities.

Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

A flexible sigmoidoscopy, a 5-15 minute test for colorectal cancer, uses a camera-equipped tube to find polyps or issues in the lower colon and rectum with minimal prep and no sedation.

Virtual Colonoscopy / Computed Tomography Colonography

Virtual colonoscopies use CT or MRI scans to create detailed images of the colon and rectum, reviewed for signs of cancer or abnormalities. They're non-invasive, quick, and sedation-free.
