Broward Health’s Healthy Families program supports expectant parents and families with newborns who may be experiencing stressful life situations. The program is nationally accredited and focuses on building strong, positive parent–child relationships while helping families gain the skills and confidence to thrive.
Through home visits, education and community support, Healthy Families works to improve childhood outcomes and strengthen long-term family stability. Screenings are offered for infants born at Broward Health Medical Center and Broward Health Coral Springs, helping identify families who could benefit from the program’s resources.
Broward Health’s Healthy Start program offers universal screening for all pregnant women and newborns in Florida. These screenings help identify families who may benefit from extra support early on, reducing the chance of health complications for both mother and child.
Through care coordination and education, Healthy Start helps families manage risk factors and life stressors that can affect pregnancy and infant health. Services may include breastfeeding support, childbirth education, parenting guidance, counseling between pregnancies, referrals to community resources and tobacco cessation support. Any pregnant woman or child up to age three is eligible for services, which are available at Broward Health Medical Center, Broward Health Coral Springs, Charles Drew Family Resource Center, Cora E. Braynon Family Health Center, Pompano Prenatal Care Center and Seagull School.
The Kinship Cares Initiative (KCI) is a Broward Health program that helps children being raised by relatives or close family friends. Kinship care includes grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings or trusted non-relatives who step in to care for children when parents are unable to do so. Families in these situations often face unique challenges, and KCI provides the guidance and resources needed to keep both children and caregivers healthy.
Through the program, families are connected with a nurse or medical case manager who works one-on-one to support their healthcare needs. This includes setting up a medical home, finding insurance coverage, scheduling wellness exams and immunizations, and helping caregivers understand and manage chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure. Families also receive education on medications, nutrition and how to navigate the healthcare system with confidence.
In addition to medical support, KCI links families to community resources that address non-medical needs. These services may include case management, educational support, emergency financial assistance, legal aid, mental health care, respite care and other wraparound services that strengthen the stability of the household.
KCI is a collaboration between Broward Health, Legal Aid, ChildNet, the Children’s Services Council of Broward County, United Way of Broward County and other local organizations dedicated to improving the health and well-being of kinship families. The program is available to families caring for children from birth through age 18, with the goal of ensuring every child has access to quality healthcare and every caregiver has the support they need to provide a safe and healthy home.
