End of Continuous Coverage: What That Means for Medicaid Recipients in Florida

End of Continuous Coverage

Medicaid is a medical assistance program that assists people and families with low incomes to get health insurance. As the federal government required, the Department of Children and Families took steps to make sure Medicaid coverage would continue during the Public Health Emergency related to COVID-19. Because of this, the number of people covered by Medicaid went from 3.8 million to 5.5 million. The continuous enrollment period that allowed people to retain their coverage has come to an end and the normal Medicaid eligibility review process has begun.

During this review process, some people will be automatically reviewed and approved. If you still qualify for Medicaid and the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) can renew your coverage without you doing anything, they will. If this is the case, when your Medicaid coverage has been renewed, you will get a letter of approval. If DCFS can't automatically renew your coverage, they'll send you a notice to reapply, and you'll need to take action and provide any needed information. If you do not respond, you may lose your Medicaid coverage.

What you need to do:

1. Update your contact information. Tell the state if you have changed addresses or your phone number, email, or other contact information. Update your contact information by logging into ACCESS Florida.

2. Check your mail. The state will mail you a letter about your coverage, letting you know if and when you need to complete a renewal to see if you still qualify for Medicaid or CHIP. Be on the lookout for the envelope with the yellow stripe!

  • Each Medicaid recipient will get their own envelope. You will not get one envelope for your whole family.
  • The first set of envelopes went out in April 2023. But you may not get your envelope until a few months from now. That’s okay.

3. Complete your renewal form. If you get a form in the mail, fill it out and send it back as soon as possible so you don't lose coverage.
