Fort Lauderdale, Florida - Broward Health Medical Center became the first hospital in Florida and the fifth in the nation to introduce the Genesis Robotic Magnetic Navigation system by Stereotaxis in March 2023. The advanced technology supports cardiac ablation procedures used to treat patients with heart rhythm disorders, also known as arrhythmias.
Broward Health celebrated the opening of its robotic electrophysiology lab with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 16, 2023. Elected officials, including Florida State Representative Chip LaMarca, City of Fort Lauderdale Vice Mayor Warren Sturman, M.D., and District 3 Commissioner Pamela Beasley-Pittman, joined hospital leaders for the celebration and tours of the lab and other cardiac care areas.
“Advancing patient care is our number one priority, and we are excited to make this unique technology available and expand our electrophysiology capabilities to treat the most complex heart arrhythmias with heightened precision,” said Ahmed F. Osman, M.D., medical director of the cardiac electrophysiology lab at Broward Health Medical Center.
The Genesis Robotic Magnetic Navigation system uses magnetic fields to help physicians guide specialized catheters through the heart during cardiac ablation procedures. This minimally invasive treatment targets areas of heart tissue responsible for certain abnormal heart rhythms. The robotic system is designed to provide physicians with greater precision and control when navigating complex areas of the heart.
Arrhythmias occur when the electrical signals controlling the heartbeat do not function normally, causing the heart to beat too quickly, too slowly or irregularly. Depending on the type and severity of the condition, treatment may include medication, cardiac ablation or other specialized procedures.
“Broward Health is committed to adopting innovative technology and making it available to patients close to home,” said Shane Strum, President & CEO of Broward Health. “We are proud to be the first in Florida to introduce this system to further enhance the comprehensive range of advanced cardiac services we deliver to our community.”
