Welcome from the Program Director

Shawn McClure, D.M.D., M.D.

Thank you for your interest in our Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program. When applying to a residency program, students and residents must consider many factors. The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program at Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine and Broward Health Medical Center is a six-year training program that accepts three residents per year for a total of twelve residents.

To apply to our program, applicants must be graduates of an accredited dental school in the United States or Canada. Canadian applicants must have a TN NAFTA Professionals Visa. Applicants residing in the United States must be permanent residents.

The program is designed to provide residents with a broad academic and surgical experience in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Clinical exposure is offered through two Level I trauma centers in Broward County and two outpatient ambulatory surgical centers. Residents gain experience in the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery while providing services in ambulatory care centers, emergency departments, trauma bays and operating rooms. Key strengths include maxillofacial trauma, benign and malignant pathology, reconstruction, cleft and craniofacial surgery, facial cosmetics, dentoalveolar surgery, implant placement and temporomandibular joint surgery. Residents also complete formal rotations in anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, medicine, general/trauma surgery and cosmetic surgery.

The curriculum is designed to develop clinical, academic and communication skills that support diverse career paths. Graduates will be prepared to pursue a full-scope Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery practice and sit for specialty board certification.

  • The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
  • Residents are exposed to the full scope of the specialty and are well prepared for the rigors of specialty board examinations.
  • Surgical skills are developed by working as first assistants alongside full-time academic oral and maxillofacial surgery faculty.
  • The program is designed to provide residents with a broad academic and didactic experience.

About the Program

Our Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers a fully accredited six-year residency program, which includes the awarding of a medical degree and a certificate in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and accepts three residents per year. Delivering comprehensive oral and maxillofacial surgical coverage for two Level I trauma centers and two children’s hospitals, residents are exposed to the breadth of the specialty and are well prepared for the rigors of specialty board examinations.

Off-service rotations provide residents with opportunities unique to our program. At the high-volume pediatric surgical facility, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, residents gain comprehensive experience in pediatric anesthesia and airway management. While assigned to the trauma surgery services, residents develop their surgical skills operating alongside staff trauma surgeons as first assistants. During the PGY-IV year, residents spend one month in private practice learning the intricacies of facial cosmetic surgery under the tutelage of Dr. Curtis Schalit.

Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine provides a steady referral stream for third molar surgery, dental implants and orthognathic surgery.

Residents are trained in the comprehensive management of benign and malignant pathology of the maxillofacial complex, with active involvement in diagnosis, operative planning and surgical management. Reconstructive training includes a range of conventional bone grafting techniques as well as microvascular reconstruction.

NSU Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery functions as a core service on the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Craniofacial Team. Through this affiliation, our residents are exposed to cleft lip and palate surgery, alveolar cleft grafting, cranial vault remodeling and cleft orthognathic surgery.

Our program embraces the implementation of cutting-edge techniques and technologies into surgical planning and execution. With an in-house 3D printer, CT scans are quickly converted into three-dimensional models for operative planning. Virtual surgical planning and custom-milled hardware are used to guide both orthognathic surgery and tumor resection/reconstruction.
