Welcome to the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program at Broward Health!

We proudly offer a one-year, ACGME-accredited Surgical Critical Care Fellowship designed to provide comprehensive, hands-on training in a supportive and academically stimulating environment. Our program is committed to developing the next generation of leaders in surgical critical care.

Throughout the 12-month fellowship, fellows will engage in high-acuity clinical care, resident and medical student teaching, and research. Clinical rotations are based at Broward Health North, a Level II Trauma Center, and Broward Health Medical Center, an ACS-verified Level I Trauma Center. Together, these centers care for more than 5,000 trauma patients annually and provide a diverse and robust clinical experience.

Fellows will rotate through the Trauma Surgical Intensive Care Units at both sites and will have opportunities to participate in a wide range of elective rotations. Electives include, but are not limited to:

  • Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
  • Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)
  • Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
  • Trauma Surgery
  • Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • Vascular Surgery
  • Hepatobiliary Surgery
  • Emergency General Surgery

In addition to clinical responsibilities, fellows will gain valuable experience in research and administrative aspects of surgical critical care, helping to prepare them for a successful career in both academic and clinical settings.

Applicants must have completed a minimum of three years in an ACGME-accredited General Surgery residency program.

Overview:

The Surgical Critical Care (SCC) Fellowship at Broward Health is a one-year, ACGME-accredited program designed to build a strong clinical foundation in the care of critically ill and injured patients. Through a structured and diverse rotation schedule, fellows gain comprehensive experience with a primary focus on intensive care, trauma, and surgical emergencies. The program emphasizes hands-on learning, clinical decision-making, and the development of essential leadership and procedural skills necessary for independent practice.

Training Highlights

  • 6 months in the Trauma Surgical Intensive Care Unit (TSICU) at Broward Health North
  • 3 months in the TSICU at Broward Health Medical Center
  • 1 month in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
  • 1 month on the Trauma Surgery service
  • 1 month of elective time to explore subspecialty interests or career-focused training
  • Additional clinical experiences in quality improvement, patient safety, and procedure-focused rotations

Fellows also participate in robust academic activities, including case conferences, morbidity & mortality (M&M) meetings, journal clubs, board review sessions, and simulation training.

This well-rounded curriculum ensures exposure to a broad spectrum of critical care scenarios and fosters the development of core competencies. Graduates are well-prepared to enter autonomous practice as skilled, confident surgical intensivists.

We participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) and do not accept applicants outside of the Match.

Our fellows are dedicated, compassionate physicians who are committed to advancing their skills and delivering exceptional care to critically ill and injured patients.

Program Leadership

Timothy Dickhudt, MD - Program Director, Surgical Critical Care Fellowship

Dr. Timothy Dickhudt is a board-certified trauma and critical care surgeon and serves as the Program Director for the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Broward Health. With a deep commitment to excellence in trauma care, surgical education, and multidisciplinary collaboration, Dr. Dickhudt plays a central role in training the next generation of surgical intensivists.

Dr. Dickhudt earned his medical degree from Creighton University School of Medicine, where he developed a strong foundation in patient-centered care and clinical excellence. He went on to complete his General Surgery residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital – University of Miami, one of the nation’s busiest and most dynamic surgical training environments. Following residency, he pursued a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he further specialized in the management of critically ill and trauma patients.

Dr. Dickhudt brings extensive experience in managing complex surgical and critical care cases, and his leadership helps shape a clinically rigorous and academically enriching program. As an attending surgeon at Broward Health Medical Center, an ACS-verified Level I Trauma Center, he is actively involved in the care of high-acuity trauma and emergency surgical patients.

He is deeply passionate about surgical education and mentorship, working closely with fellows, residents, and medical students to foster a culture of learning, inquiry, and compassionate care. Under his direction, the fellowship program emphasizes a balanced, immersive experience that includes hands-on clinical training, scholarly research, and administrative leadership.

In addition to his clinical and educational roles, Dr. Dickhudt is a dedicated advocate for quality improvement and trauma system development. He remains actively involved in institutional and regional initiatives to advance patient outcomes and promote excellence in surgical critical care.

 

Eric Johnson, DO - Associate Program Director, Surgical Critical Care Fellowship

Dr. Eric Johnson is a board-certified trauma and critical care surgeon and serves as the Associate Program Director of the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Broward Health. In this leadership role, Dr. Johnson is deeply involved in shaping fellows' educational experience, fostering clinical excellence, academic growth, and leadership development among the next generation of surgical intensivists.

Dr. Johnson earned his medical degree from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine, completed his General Surgery residency at NYU Lutheran Medical Center, and went on to complete a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in New York City.

Dr. Johnson has a strong clinical background in trauma, emergency general, and surgical critical care. He works closely with faculty, fellows, and residents to promote a rigorous, supportive training environment, emphasizing evidence-based practice, critical thinking, and hands-on learning.

Passionate about surgical education and mentorship, Dr. Johnson actively contributes to the fellowship program's curriculum development, simulation training, and research initiatives. His guidance is instrumental in preparing fellows for the complex demands of modern surgical critical care.

Dr. Johnson also plays a key role in quality improvement and multidisciplinary collaboration across Broward Health’s trauma and critical care services. His dedication to advancing patient outcomes and fostering teamwork has made him a respected leader and educator within the institution.
