Dear Applicants,

We appreciate your interest in Broward Health Family Medicine. As you click around our website, you will find our program is unique in many ways.

Our program is ideal for motivated individuals seeking robust training in both inpatient and outpatient medicine. Your inpatient education will take place at Broward Health, one of the ten largest public hospital systems in the United States. We are nationally recognized by our system’s 1500-plus beds, Level 1 Trauma Center, and the county’s first certified liver transplant program and stroke center. In addition to taking care of patients in our community, we are responsible for providing medical services involving Fort Lauderdale International Airport, the Port Authority, and the cruise line industry. Our program has its own inpatient team with a substantial patient census guaranteed to provide our residents with significant exposure to a variety of patients with extensive pathologies. You will not find many other family medicine residency programs that will provide such a vigorous hospital-training experience. Our outpatient clinic is uniquely located on a medical school campus at Nova Southeastern University. It is in our busy family medicine clinic that our residents work directly under the supervision of medical school faculty in an academic environment. Each resident manages his or her own patient panel and is supported by the attending physicians, medical assistants, and administrative personnel in a congenial environment. Finally, all of our residents are actively involved in research and are encouraged to pursue endeavors in their areas of interest. When you complete our program, you will be equipped to provide medical care in any setting, both inpatient and outpatient, in our nation’s intricate healthcare system.

They are graduates of American and international osteopathic (D.O.) and allopathic (M.D.) medical schools. They hail from all parts of the world including Afghanistan, Haiti, Iran and Cuba. Some are first-generation Americans and others are the first in their families to go to college and move on to professional careers. Many enjoyed successful careers in various fields including biotechnology before pursuing careers as primary care providers. Take a look at some of our Alumni. About the Program

The Broward Health Family Medicine Residency Program, in partnership with Nova Southeastern University, is dedicated to training knowledgeable and compassionate family physicians who deliver comprehensive, culturally competent care in today’s complex healthcare landscape.

Our curriculum is designed to foster lifelong learning, emphasizing the continuous expansion of medical knowledge, strong interpersonal and professional development, and the enduring value of compassionate bedside care. Unlike many other family medicine programs, our residents take on the unique challenge of managing a high patient volume in a large community-based hospital while also maintaining their own continuity clinics in an academic outpatient setting.

Guided by a team of experienced attending physicians and faculty, residents gain a robust foundation through hands-on clinical training, exposure to a wide range of pathologies, and integration of the latest medical technologies. Our graduates are well-prepared for fellowships, academic roles, and clinical practice in both inpatient and outpatient settings—ready to lead and provide high-quality primary care in any healthcare environment across the country.

Curriculum

Cardiology

During the cardiology rotation, residents collaborate with a specialized team to provide inpatient cardiac care. Responsibilities include cardiac consultations, order management and medical treatment of conditions such as arrhythmias, myocardial infarctions, pulmonary edema and complications related to anticoagulation or thrombolytic therapy. Residents also participate in emergency cardiac care, including code response.

Community Health

Residents gain valuable exposure to underserved populations by rotating with Broward Health-affiliated clinics or through select electives. These rotations enhance residents' abilities in primary care disease management, while also promoting the development of cultural competence and a deeper understanding of the social determinants of health.

Dermatology

Residents work alongside dermatologists in private practice, provide inpatient consults and serve patients in a hospital-based dermatology clinic for the underserved. This rotation emphasizes the diagnosis and management of various dermatologic conditions and includes hands-on experience in procedures such as skin biopsies, cryotherapy and minor surgical interventions.

Electives

Elective rotations allow residents to tailor their training to their individual interests and career goals. Residents may choose from established options or collaborate with the program director to create customized electives that further their development in specific areas of interest.

Emergency Medicine

At Broward Health Medical Center (BHMC), a Level 1 Trauma Center, residents encounter a high volume of patients with a wide range of emergent conditions. This fast-paced environment offers hands-on experience in managing both adult and pediatric emergencies, performing procedures, and addressing the needs of diverse populations. Senior residents also rotate through the emergency department at Broward Health Coral Springs for additional exposure.

Family Medicine Ambulatory Care Clinic

The NSU Sanford L. Ziff Clinic serves as the primary site for residents' continuity care experience. Here, residents provide preventive, acute, and chronic care to a diverse patient population. Under the guidance of dedicated Family Medicine physicians, residents gradually assume more autonomy over the three-year program. This longitudinal experience helps residents build confidence, clinical acumen, and strong doctor-patient relationships.

Family Medicine Inpatient

The Family Medicine (FM) inpatient service provides comprehensive care for hospitalized patients from the Sanford L. Ziff Clinic and the broader Broward community. The team is comprised of two first-year residents and two senior residents, all supervised by experienced Family Medicine attendings. During this rotation, residents participate in morning report, engage in noon-time CME didactics and collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary healthcare team. The FM inpatient service offers exposure to a wide variety of medical conditions, fostering the development of clinical decision-making, leadership and teaching skills, especially through interactions with medical students.

General Surgery

Residents gain surgical experience at Coral Springs Medical Center under the guidance of a private surgical group. They participate in the care of surgical patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings, learn perioperative and postoperative management and gain familiarity with common surgical procedures and referral criteria.

Inpatient Pediatrics

At Broward Health Coral Springs, residents care for acutely ill children and participate in comprehensive teaching rounds. This rotation strengthens their skills in pediatric inpatient management. Additionally, residents receive dedicated training in newborn care through rotations in the newborn nursery, preparing them for a wide range of pediatric scenarios.

Obstetrics and Gynecology

Residents gain broad exposure to women’s health in both inpatient and outpatient settings. They manage general gynecologic issues, perform procedures and work alongside OB/GYN physicians in prenatal, labor and delivery, postpartum and surgical care. The rotation includes experience with high-risk obstetrics and emergency OB situations, promoting competence in comprehensive women’s health care.

Palliative Medicine

This rotation allows residents to work closely with Palliative Medicine and Pain Management specialists across various settings, including outpatient clinics, inpatient units and assisted living facilities. The experience emphasizes holistic care, effective communication and symptom management for patients with serious or life-limiting conditions.

Psychiatry

In their first year, residents complete a four-week inpatient psychiatry rotation, where they learn to evaluate, triage, and manage a range of mental health conditions. Residents see patients admitted voluntarily or involuntarily and participate in ER consults and inpatient evaluations. Topics include capacity assessment, coping with illness, altered mental status, and psychiatric emergencies.

Selective Medicine

Residents select from a diverse list of subspecialties for focused training in various aspects of internal medicine. Options include, but may not be limited to:

These rotations allow for targeted learning and subspecialty exposure.

Sports Medicine

These rotations expose residents to a variety of musculoskeletal and sports-related conditions in the outpatient setting. Residents improve their proficiency in musculoskeletal exams, joint injections, musculoskeletal ultrasonography and sports physicals and develop a deeper understanding of injury prevention and rehabilitation.

Clinical Rotations for Medical Students

We are pleased to offer a limited number of externships and sub-internships for active fourth-year medical students who are on track to graduate from an accredited medical school.

Curriculum & Experience

During your rotation, you'll work alongside our residents and faculty on a resident-led inpatient service. You’ll have the opportunity to:

Participate in daily rounds
Present patient cases
Engage in direct patient care
Observe a variety of procedures our patients undergo during their admission
Attend weekly didactic sessions

Both 2-week and 4-week rotation options are available.

Requirements

Must be a fourth-year medical student in good academic standing
Rotation placement is subject to approval by the Program Director
Completion of all required paperwork is necessary prior to starting the rotation
