The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency Program offers comprehensive, hands-on training that prepares residents to restore function and improve quality of life for patients across a wide spectrum of physical conditions.

Welcome to the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) Program at Broward Health North! Our residency campus is located in Deerfield Beach, Florida — just minutes from the beach and close to Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and West Palm Beach. Broward Health is one of the 20 largest public health systems in the United States. Broward Health North is a 409-bed Level II Trauma Center with extensive medical and surgical subspecialty services. We are delighted that you are considering our program as a potential place to continue your medical training. You’ve worked hard, and the next three years will form the foundation of how you approach and practice medicine.

Our PM&R program received initial accreditation from the ACGME in January 2024 for 12 categorical positions. We are proud of the work and dedication that went into achieving this milestone, supported by a group of experienced faculty in graduate medical education.

We are dedicated to offering an outstanding clinical training experience in a friendly and supportive atmosphere to prepare our residents to become leading clinicians in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The program incorporates training sites from South Florida's leaders in physiatry, orthopedics, neurosurgery, neurology and sports medicine with the goal of training excellent physicians capable of flourishing in any clinical environment.

The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) Residency Program is designed to train both community-oriented and academically focused physiatrists, supporting the broader mission of the Broward Health to provide high-quality, compassionate care to all patients and their families.

Program Highlights

The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) Residency Program is committed to advancing resident development through clinical excellence, continuous improvement, and innovative research in basic science. Our program educates trainees in the core principles of physical medicine and rehabilitation, while emphasizing compassionate, patient-centered care that enhances both patient and staff well-being and function.

Personal experience and knowledge are cultivated through ongoing learning, hands-on work and broad clinical exposure. Our training infrastructure includes eight carefully selected inpatient and outpatient locations, offering residents a diverse and comprehensive learning environment:

The educational experience is centered on diagnosing, evaluating and managing individuals of all ages with physical and cognitive impairments, disabilities and functional limitations.

Common conditions treated include:

  • Stroke
  • Brain injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Severe neuromuscular and cardiopulmonary deconditioning, general debility
  • Burns, cancer, spasticity, wound care
  • Neurologic disorders: multiple sclerosis, ALS, Guillain-Barré syndrome, myasthenia gravis, neuropathies
  • Amputations, arthritides, arthropathies, orthopedic fractures
  • Major multiple trauma and neurosurgical conditions
  • Pediatric conditions: cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy and trauma
  • Acute and chronic pain

Core Curriculum

Our didactic curriculum is organized into monthly educational modules based on high-yield PM&R topics. At the end of each module, a medical knowledge quiz is administered and scored. Protected didactic time takes place every Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and includes a combination of attending, resident and student presentations, as well as workshops. Applications

Our PM&R program is a 3-year advanced program offering positions starting at the PGY-2 level. Before entering the program, applicants must complete a preliminary year (PGY-1) in a medicine, transitional, or surgical internship.

All applications to the PM&R Residency Program at Broward Health North are processed through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

We participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) and do not accept applicants outside of the Match.

Application Requirements

All applications must be submitted through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service), which is administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and reviewed holistically. We do not accept applications via fax, email, or postal services.

  • Passing USMLE Step 1 and/or COMLEX 1 score is required prior to interview invitation.
  • Passing USMLE Step 2 and/or COMLEX 2 score is required to be ranked.
  • Dean’s Letter (MSPE)
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation (LORs)
  • At least one LOR must be from a physiatrist.
  • Personal Statement
  • Medical School Transcripts (international transcripts must be translated)
  • ECFMG Certificate, if applicable
  • Curriculum Vitae or Resume

International Applicants

In addition to the application requirements listed previously, International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must meet the following criteria:

  • Graduated from medical school within the last 5 years
  • Passed USMLE Step 1 and Step 2
  • USMLE Step 3 is not required to apply
  • Eligible for an ECFMG Certificate:
    • We require an ECFMG certificate on file for every IMG intern who matches with our program.

Additional Requirements for International Applicants:

  • Eligibility for Florida Medical Training Licensure
  • Eligibility for J1 visa sponsorship

Application and Interview Process

  • Only applications submitted through ERAS will be accepted (see application requirements above).
  • We recommend submitting your application as early as possible, as interview slots fill quickly.
  • Invitations to interview will be sent via email through ERAS.
  • All interviews will be conducted virtually.
  • Only applicants with an interview appointment will be considered for an interview.

Through comprehensive training, effective rehabilitation techniques and personalized mentorship, we prepare future leaders to deliver outstanding, patient-centered care.

Program Leadership

Meilani Mapa, MD - Program Director

Dr. Meilani Mapa is a board-certified Doctor of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, practicing for more than 20 years.

She earned her medical degree at Northeast Ohio Medical University in 2003 and completed her internship at Summa Health Systems/Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in 2004. She served as a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation resident physician at Baylor College of Medicine. She completed her fellowship in brain injury medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.

Dr. Mapa was previously an assistant professor at The Ohio State University and The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.

Before joining Broward Health, Dr. Mapa was the Medical Director of Brain Injury Medicine and Quality and founding Program Director of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program at the Memorial Healthcare System.


Minh Quan T. Le, MD - Associate Program Director

Dr. Minh Quan Le is a South Florida native. He completed his residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital where he served as Chief Resident. He performed his Fellowship in Sports Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Le has numerous publications in Peer-Review Journals and is a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He serves as the Associate Program Director for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency.
