Medications for Heart Failure

Medications are an essential part of managing heart failure. Your care team will design a plan based on your condition, other health factors, and how your heart responds to treatment. Common medications include:

  • Aldosterone agonists: Reduce strain on the heart.
  • ACE inhibitors: Relax blood vessels to improve blood flow.
  • Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs): Used when ACE inhibitors aren’t well tolerated.
  • ARNIs (angiotensin receptor–neprilysin inhibitors): Lower pressure on the heart by relaxing blood vessels.
  • Antiarrhythmics: Help control irregular heartbeats.
  • Anticoagulants (blood thinners): Prevent blood clots.
  • Beta-blockers: Slow the heart rate and help it beat more efficiently.
  • Cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins): Help manage cholesterol levels.
  • SGLT2 inhibitors: Improve heart function and relieve heart failure symptoms.
