Tests to Diagnose Heart Failure

Heart Failure Tests We Provide
If your care team suspects your symptoms may be related to heart failure, they may recommend one or more of the following tests to help confirm a diagnosis:
- Blood tests: These measure certain proteins and markers that can indicate heart failure and provide insight into your overall health.
- Chest X-ray: A quick, painless test that shows the size and shape of your heart and whether there’s fluid in your lungs—a common sign of heart failure.
- Echocardiogram: A noninvasive ultrasound that shows how well your heart pumps and identifies structural or functional problems
If initial tests are inconclusive or your symptoms are more complex, your provider may recommend advanced testing:
- Cardiac catheterization: A minimally invasive procedure that checks blood flow and looks for blocked or narrowed arteries to guide your treatment plan.
- Electrocardiogram (EKG/ ECG): Measures your heart’s electrical activity to detect abnormal rhythms or other irregularities.
- Cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET): Evaluates how well your heart and lungs perform during physical activity by tracking oxygen levels and heart rate while you walk or cycle.
To see your heart’s structure and function in detail, we may use advanced imaging options such as:
- Cardiac MRI: Uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of your heart, helping detect damage or disease with precision and without surgery.
- CardioMEMS™ HF System: A small implanted sensor that remotely monitors pressure in your pulmonary artery, allowing your care team to track your heart failure symptoms and adjust treatment as needed.
