Advanced Wound Care

If you’re among the more than 6.5 million Americans living with chronic nonhealing wounds – an injury that either doesn’t follow the standard healing process or takes longer than three months to heal - you understand the impact it can have on your daily life. From pain to impaired functionality and life-threatening complications, including the possibility of limb amputation, living with wounds isn’t easy.

That’s why at Broward Health, our wound care and hyperbaric medicine experts work directly with you to create a treatment plan that not only incorporates protocols specifically for your wound type but one that fits within your lifestyle, as well.

Signs and Symptoms of Chronic Wounds

If you have an injury that isn’t healing properly, or it’s failed to return to full functionality even after three months, you may have a chronic wound. Other signs include:

  • Blueish or dark edges to the injury
  • Inflammation and increasing redness
  • Leaking or weeping wounds
  • Pain that continues or worsens
  • Wounds that smell bad

If you have any of these new or worsening symptoms, call your doctor for help. It’s important you start treatment as soon as possible.

Who’s at Risk for Chronic Wounds?

While chronic wounds can occur to anyone, certain risk factors increase your likelihood of developing them.

These include both controllable and noncontrollable risk factors, such as:

  • Age
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Obesity
  • Repeated physical trauma
  • Smoking
  • Weakened immune system
  • Vascular disease

 What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

At Broward Health, we use hyperbaric oxygen therapy for patients with:

  • Chronic bone infections
  • Lower limb diabetic wounds
  • Radiation damage to the soft tissue and bone
  • Skin grafts and flaps (both preparation and preservation)

During a hyperbaric therapy session – most patients require 30-40 treatments, each lasting approximately two hours -- you sit inside a pressurized chamber and breathe pure oxygen, which helps accelerate the healing process for wounds. Breathing in 100% oxygen also stimulates the growth of new blood vessels, improving your circulation and reducing your chances for further side effects in the future.

At Broward Health, hyperbaric oxygen therapy patients receive care in our 107-inch (8’ 9”) Sechrist 4100 H/HR Series hyperbaric chambers. Each equipped with a television allowing you to relax and watch your favorite show or movie during treatment.

Other Treatment Options for Wound Care

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy isn’t right for everyone, which is why our multidisciplinary wound care experts also use the following options in your care:

  • Diabetic education
  • Laboratory evaluations
  • Nuclear medicine
  • Nutritional management
  • Orthopedic services
  • Pain management

Once treatment begins, you’ll regularly visit one of our Wound Care and Hyperbaric Centers to monitor your healing progress. We will also work with you, providing information and training to maintain your wound care at home between treatments, protecting your wound from further injury.
