Coral Springs, Florida – Broward Health Coral Springs is proud to announce the successful completion of its first PFO (patent foramen ovale) closure procedure using the GORE® CARDIOFORM Septal Occluder, marking a significant milestone in the hospital's cardiovascular care.
The procedure, performed by Pablo Rengifo-Moreno, M.D., director of the structural heart disease program at Broward Health, further expands access to advanced structural heart therapies across the Broward Health system.
"We are grateful to be able to offer this advanced level of structural heart care to our patients in western Broward County," said Dr. Rengifo-Moreno. "Expanding this therapy to Broward Health Coral Springs means more patients can receive timely, potentially life-saving treatment without having to travel far from home."
A PFO is a small opening between the heart’s upper chambers that is present at birth and affects about 25% of the general population. Most people with a PFO have no symptoms and do not require treatment, however, in some cases, a PFO can allow a blood clot to travel to the brain and cause a stroke. For carefully selected patients who have experienced a stroke with no other clear cause, this minimally invasive PFO closure can help reduce the risk of future strokes.
With this addition, the procedure is now available at three Broward Health facilities: Broward Health Medical Center, Broward Health North and Broward Health Coral Springs.
