Deerfield Beach, Florida - Broward Health is pleased to announce the appointment of Cornelius Powell, M.D., MBA, CHCQM, as the new chief medical officer of Broward Health North.

A board-certified emergency physician and accomplished healthcare executive, Dr. Powell brings extensive experience leading complex hospital operations, quality initiatives and physician engagement strategies across major health systems nationwide. Most recently, he served as vice president and chief medical officer of Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center in Virginia, overseeing medical affairs, quality, infection prevention, trauma services, critical care, hospital medicine and multiple clinical service lines.
During his tenure at Sentara Williamsburg, Dr. Powell helped launch new programs in trauma, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery and obstetrics, while achieving top system-wide performance metrics in patient safety, quality outcomes and patient experience. Under his leadership, the hospital earned a Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade “A” recognition and achieved significant improvements in readmissions, emergency department throughput and length of stay metrics.
Prior to his role at Sentara Williamsburg, Dr. Powell held several senior leadership positions, including regional medical director and vice president of operations for American Physician Partners, where he supervised more than 200 physicians and advanced practice clinicians across multiple states. He also served in leadership roles at Tucson Medical Center and John Peter Smith Hospital, overseeing large emergency departments and implementing operational improvements that significantly enhanced patient satisfaction, efficiency and clinical quality.
Serving in the United States Army as a Special Forces medic, Dr. Powell completed deployments in Iraq and the Philippines while leading medical operations and training initiatives in high-pressure environments.
Dr. Powell earned his Doctor of Medicine from East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine and completed his emergency medicine residency at Carolinas Medical Center. He also holds an Executive Master of Business Administration from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
