Rising Beyond Expectations
Julien Osiris and Odin Jericho Perez were born at 28 weeks weighing less than three pounds each. The first two months of their lives were spent in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where they fought to live.
Because they were born so early, the boys needed help feeding and reaching their childhood milestones. The family discovered Children's Diagnostic & Treatment Center (CDTC) through a referral to the Early Steps Program.
For first-time parents Angie and Enrique Perez, the support offered by CDTC has been instrumental in continuing the twins' much-needed, extensive medical care. Through the CDTC, the Perez twins have access to a care team of doctors, nurses, social workers, health educators, nutritionists and early intervention professionals.
When at the age 3 Julien and Odin were diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, they were able to receive therapy and to begin early steps education. Now 7 years old, the twins are excelling in second grade and are happy boys who love reading, the outdoors and video games.
"Osiris and Odin are very happy little boys," said CDTC pediatrician Berenise Lafrance, M.D. "They are doing amazingly well despite their medical history. The mother is devoted to their care and seeing to all their needs."
Very much their own characters, the twins steal attention wherever they go. Odin, the rough and tumble stouter of the two, never turns down a meal to be big and strong "like daddy." Osiris is always trying to make new friends and has a softer side.
Although their seven-year journey has been a long one, the support, guidance and encouragement from the boys' care team enables Angie and Enrique to make informed decisions, allowing them to enjoy the twins' progress.
"My advice is to not give up," says Enrique. "Realize that your child is not broken, just different. They will surprise you and rise beyond expectations."
