Krishendial “Kris” Mootiram

Heart Attack

"It felt like someone took a sledgehammer to my chest"

Krishendial "Kris" Mootiram was at work like any normal day when he began to feel tightness in his chest, a pain he had never felt before. He disregarded the pain as possible indigestion and went about his day. He later felt a terrible pounding on his chest and told his supervisor that he needed help.

"I felt a pain that was indescribable," Mootiram said. "It felt like someone took a sledgehammer to my chest."

His supervisor immediately called 911 and within minutes Mootiram was brought to the Emergency Department at Broward Health North. Exams showed that Mootiram was having a heart attack. His main artery to the heart was 100 percent blocked.

Mootiram was rushed to the cardiac catheterization lab, where cardiologist Andre Landau, M.D., inserted four stents to open blood flow to the heart. Mootiram was also given an intra-aortic balloon pump to reopen other blocked arteries near his heart. Because of these life-saving procedures, Mootiram did not need a quadruple bypass open-heart surgery, which can be more invasive than a cardiac catheterization.

Mootiram is back to the life he loves thanks to the team at Broward Health North. He gets emotional when he talks about the caregivers who saved his life.

"I can't find the words to say how grateful I am," he said. "Now I take time to enjoy my family and enjoy life - the life Broward Health North has given back to me."
