Fort Lauderdale, Florida - Broward HealthPoint, a Broward Health affiliate that provides comprehensive health services to uninsured and underinsured community members, announced a new name and launched a new mobile health unit at an event on Sept. 14.
Formerly operating as Broward Health Community Health Services, Broward HealthPoint is now a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) and an affiliate of Broward Health. As an FQHC, it will receive some federal funds to provide high-quality, comprehensive healthcare services to the community, regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.
The mobile health unit is designed to improve access to primary care services for adults who are uninsured. The mobile health unit will travel to the sites of community-based partners like homeless shelters, feeding cooperatives and faith-based organizations. Appointments on the mobile unit are only available to Broward HealthPoint’s community partners.
“The mobile health unit will help us drive high-quality healthcare directly to some of our most vulnerable neighbors who experience the greatest challenges accessing care,” said Christina Grove, Interim Vice President of Ambulatory Services at Broward Health. “As the medical safety net in the northern two-thirds of Broward County, we hope to reduce healthcare disparities in the community through innovative solutions like this mobile health unit.”
The interior of the unit was custom designed with exam rooms, private consultation rooms and a waiting room. It is also equipped with an ADA-compliant wheelchair ramp and an expandable awning that provides shade for an outdoor waiting area.
Mobile health unit services include screenings for preventable conditions such as diabetes and high cholesterol, in addition to rapid flu tests, flu vaccination, urinalysis, prostate cancer screening and more.
These screenings help prevent or reduce the impact of some of the most prevalent health conditions impacting our community, according to a recent community needs assessment that Broward Health conducted with the Broward Regional Health Planning Council.
“We’re excited to remove cost and transportation as barriers to essential primary healthcare and screenings to positively impact the health and quality of life of our patients,” said Alvo Calvo, D.O., family medicine physician with Broward Health Physician Group and medical director of Broward Health Ambulatory Services.
