DEXA body screening that test percent body fat. We partner with Lillian Wells Women's Center to provide this screening. A Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA or DXA) scan is the most accurate way of measuring body fat and the gold standard of measuring body fat. The DEXA method determines percentage fat, fat mass, bone mass, and lean mass separately for the arms, trunk, and legs.
Our Exercise Physiologist will review the results with the participant and provide a program to improve one's percent body fat results.
A Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scan (DEXA or DXA) is the most accurate way to measure body fat in the fitness industry. The machine works by aiming two x-ray beams with different energy levels at a patient’s bones. The machine scans the body and is able to detect bone mass, muscle mass and fat mass. Bone and muscle mass are subtracted out and the remaining body fat can be measured. The process typically occurs with a patient lying on the machine with their feet and arms together. The machine slowly moves from the head to toe mapping the entire body. The scan takes between 10 and 15 minutes. A DEXA scan is not commonly found in personal fitness centers, they are typically only available at large universities’ fitness centers.
